The Gurugram administration has taken a proactive step to protect school children from the growing pollution levels in the National Capital Region (NCR) by suspending classes from nursery to class five until further notice. Following suit, Faridabad’s Deputy Commissioner Vikram Singh has also ordered the closure of schools for children from class one to five starting from Tuesday until November 12.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Gurugram has been at an “extremely dangerous” level for the past week, reaching a staggering 412 on Monday. Consequently, the industrial district has been ranked fifth among the most polluted cities in the country.

In response to the deteriorating air quality, Gurugram District Disaster Management Authority Chairman and DC Nishant Kumar Yadav issued the order on Monday. To ensure that students’ education is not disrupted, schools have been instructed to continue with online studies.

This directive applies to all private and government educational institutions in the district and will go into effect on November 7 until further notice. Yadav emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the air quality index has reached the GRAP IV stage due to the continuous deterioration.

Prior to this decision, the Haryana government had requested the deputy commissioners in the NCR to assess the situation in their respective districts and decide whether to close schools. Over the past few days, several districts, including Gurugram, have experienced ‘severe’ levels of air pollution, recording pollution levels around seven to eight times above the government-prescribed safe limit on Monday morning.

To prioritize the well-being of students, local authorities have taken necessary measures in the face of the ongoing pollution crisis. By suspending in-person classes and shifting to online education, they aim to protect the health and safety of the younger generation amidst the alarming pollution levels in the NCR region.
