Microsoft is taking a new approach to increase the longevity of its Surface laptops by offering six years worth of driver and firmware updates for devices released after January 1, 2021. This move aims to enhance device performance and introduce new features over time. The expansion of support appears to have been implemented in early October, coinciding with the launch of the Surface Laptop Go 3.

A visit to the official support page reveals a comprehensive list of Surface models that will receive extended support, with the end of servicing date specified for each device. Notable models included in this list are the Surface Pro 8, Surface Laptop Studio, and Surface Go 3, all of which will receive their final patch on October 5, 2027.

However, it is important to note that this extended support does not apply to operating system (OS) updates. Surface laptops will continue to receive Windows OS feature and security patches as per Microsoft’s lifecycle policy. The Surface Duo 2 tablet also remains unaffected by these changes, with its last update set for October 21 of next year.

Most Surface models released before January 1, 2021, will follow the previous four-year plan, though there are a few exceptions. Some devices will gain expanded support for up to five-and-a-half years. For example, the Surface Laptop 3, released in October 2019, will have its end-of-service date set for July 2024.

Interestingly, Microsoft’s decision to expand patch rollout raises the question of whether they were inspired by Google’s similar initiative for Chromebooks. In September, Google announced its commitment to providing longer software support for Chromebooks, extending up to 10 years. While Microsoft’s promise is not as generous, it is encouraging to see tech companies extending the lifespan of their hardware.
