WhatsApp Introduces Enhanced Voice Chat Feature for Large Group Calls

In a recent update, WhatsApp has upgraded its Voice Chat feature, allowing users to host large group calls with up to 128 participants. Although the platform has not made a formal announcement, details can be found on its Help Center support website.

The new feature allows users to start a group voice chat by going to a group chat, tapping the audio read-out icon, and selecting Start Voice Chat. It is important to note that this functionality is only available on the user’s primary device, and calls will automatically end once everyone leaves. Additionally, calls will end after an hour if no one joins the chat.

The update also includes a less disruptive feature, as participants will not be rung when a call starts. Instead, they will receive a push notification with an in-chat bubble that they must tap to join. The screen also includes controls to mute, unmute, or message other participants without leaving the chat. Furthermore, all large voice chats will be end-to-end encrypted, ensuring privacy and security.

According to reports, the patch will be rolling out to the Android and iOS apps over the coming weeks, with the feature first made available to larger groups hosting 33 to 128 participants. It is unclear why smaller chats will have to wait to receive the same feature, but Meta may be prioritizing larger chats before expanding to all users.

There is no information on whether WhatsApp plans to expand this feature to the desktop app, but updates may be available in the future.
