Google Maps Receives New Features for Easier Holiday Travel

As the holiday season approaches, Google Maps is getting an update to help users with planning and traveling during this busy time. The update includes three new features, the first of which is updated “transit directions” that provide the best route to a destination based on various factors. This includes trip length, estimated arrival time, and the number of transfers needed. Users will also be able to customize their routes using filters to focus on specific types of transit.

Additionally, the app will now show the locations of entrances and exits to stations in over 80 cities around the world, including Boston, London, New York City, Sydney, and Toronto. It will also indicate which side of the street they are on and if there is a clear walking route.

A new collaborative list tool will allow invited users to vote on activities using emoji reactions, such as a heart, smiley face, flame, or thumbs down. Users can also react to publicly posted photos with emojis, and in some cases, they will be given the option to use mashup reactions via Emoji Kitchen.

All of these features will be rolling out globally to Android and iOS devices starting today. The update also includes tools to help users “navigate the holidays,” such as finding nearby charging stations for electric vehicles and purchasing train tickets directly through the app.
