The latest addition to Sony’s PlayStation 5 hardware lineup comes in the form of the PlayStation Portal. This accessory aims to provide portable access to your PS5 console and game library through an internet connection using Sony’s PS Remote Play app concept. Although it does not have natively gaming capabilities like the Nintendo Switch, it offers an entirely different experience.
Priced at $199.99 / £199.99, the PlayStation Portal is readily available, but stock is currently limited. Despite being comparable in price to the Nintendo Switch Lite, it is important to remember that the Portal is solely for Remote Play, and therefore requires an existing PS5. With its build quality and ergonomic design, including an 8-inch LCD screen, this device offers a remarkable portable PS5 experience.
In terms of design, the Portable feels sturdy, while being comfortable and easy to handle. Weighing 18.66oz / 529g, it is noticeably heavier than expected, but is also larger and feels durable. Its controller wings and overall feel are familiar to PS5 owners, featuring all of the buttons and components of a standard DualSense controller, as well as the added features of built-in speakers and various connectivity options.
In terms of performance and battery life, the PlayStation Portal is a seamless and smooth performer. It offers a superior Remote Play experience when compared to using a PC, providing a reliable and consistent connection. The 8-inch LCD screen is bright and crisp, and overall offers a quality, lag-free experience. The portal’s speakers are serviceable but struggle at the low end, and there is no Bluetooth support. Despite these minor issues, the Portal offers a transformative gaming experience for Remote Play enthusiasts.
