Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth co-director Naoki Hamaguchi hopes to give players a deeper connection with Sephiroth in his playable moments. In an exclusive interview with Everyeye, Hamaguchi and producer Yoshinori Kitase discussed the highly anticipated sequel, covering everything from the remake of the 1997 classic to the changes made to the story and the refinement and expansion of the gameplay from Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Hamaguchi explained that the decision to let players control Sephiroth came from the desire to give players a better understanding of his character and motivations. He stated, “We wanted the player to feel more empathy with Sephiroth, and that’s why we believed that making him playable was the best way to create a bond with the user.”

The co-director added, “Having Sephiroth as a playable character is the best way to allow the player to understand his point of view, and thus adds an additional emotional layer to all future encounters with the character.”

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is scheduled to release on February 29, 2024, exclusively for PlayStation 5. It continues the story from Final Fantasy 7 Remake and is expected to offer nearly 100 hours of adventure. However, the game will not be receiving any DLC after its release.
