The rescue operation to save 41 workers trapped in a collapsed portion of the Uttarkashi tunnel in Uttarakhand, India has been ongoing for 13 days. The director of ONGC, Sanjay Bhatt, who is present at the site, has expressed optimism that the workers will be rescued by Friday.
Bhatt stated, “We are hopeful that the rescue operation will be concluded and the workers brought out safely by today. As of now, there is no major hindrance to the operation and everyone is hopeful that the workers will be rescued by this evening.” Ambulances and emergency medical aid are on standby at the other end of the tunnel to provide immediate assistance to the workers once they are brought out safely.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel conducted a demonstration of wheeled stretchers movement through the pipeline inserted to extricate the trapped workers, expressing that they did not face any breathing problems during the exercise and could move out comfortably.
The drilling work to evacuate the trapped workers was halted again after the auger machine encountered a technical snag on Thursday night. Bhaskar Khulbe, a former advisor to the Prime Minister’s Office, explained that a 2-meter portion of the inserted pipe had to be cut off due to compression caused by friction while drilling. Despite these challenges, Khulbe expressed confidence that the trapped workers may be extricated by Friday. (ANI)
