Former Google engineer Anthony Levandowski is relaunching his “Way of the Future” AI church, with the mission of helping people gain a deeper understanding of artificial intelligence. Levandowski made the announcement on an episode of Bloomberg’s AI IRL podcast, marking the return of his AI-dedicated church that was first established in 2015 during his tenure at Google’s self-driving project, Waymo. While the original church was closed down a few years later, Levandowski’s new endeavor has already attracted “a couple thousand people” seeking to establish a “spiritual connection” with AI, according to Bloomberg.
In discussing the church’s purpose, Levandowski expressed his intention to facilitate a better understanding of AI and enable more individuals to have a voice in shaping the technology’s use. He emphasized the importance of addressing how people, including those in rural America, can relate to and benefit from AI and its impact on jobs.
Levandowski’s church first gained widespread attention in 2017 when he was embroiled in a high-profile court case over accusations of intellectual property theft. He later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months in prison but was subsequently pardoned in 2021 by then-President Donald Trump, with the pardon citing Levandowski’s commitment to using his talents for the public good.
Following his legal troubles, Levandowski has transitioned into a new role as the CEO of Pollen Mobile, a decentralized mobile network that he founded in 2021, marking a new chapter in his career after his involvement with the development of self-driving cars and his controversial church project.
