Asus BR1402F: Innovation in Education Technology

Asus has released the BR1402F, a unique device designed specifically for the educational market. Combining the features of a large 14-inch tablet and a rugged splash-resistant laptop, this 2-in-1 device aims to cater to the needs of students and educators.

However, the success of the BR1402F in educational settings largely depends on the software it runs and its compatibility with stylus or finger input. If the software does not support these features, the tablet mode of the device becomes somewhat redundant.

One area where the BR1402F stands out is its impressive array of ports. Asus has equipped the device with Ethernet, HDMI out, USB 3.2 Gen 1 (Type-A and Type-C), an audio jack, and a Kensington lock slot. Additionally, the device offers the option for fingerprint reading, and all units come with a stylus housed in a convenient spring-loaded garage.

Internally, the BR1402F features a modular design, making it relatively easy to repair in the event of panel, I/O, or battery damage. This ensures longevity and cost-effectiveness for educational institutions.

With a price starting at around $600, the BR1402F may seem like a bargain. However, the device falls short in terms of processing power, offering what we consider to be the bare minimum for a Windows 11 system. Powered by the Core i3-N305 processor, a 1.8GHz CPU with eight cores but no hyperthreading, and equipped with UHD Graphics (32 EU), the device’s performance is underwhelming.

On the plus side, the N305 processor has a maximum power consumption of 15W, allowing the 3-cell 50WHrs Li-ion battery to keep the device running for a full working day of up to ten hours.

Another drawback of the BR1402F is its weight. Weighing at 1.56 kg (3.44 lbs), the device may be challenging for adults to hold in tablet mode, let alone children.

Despite its modest performance, the BR1402F may face limitations as software and educational demands change. However, considering the typical lifespan of devices used in educational settings, repurposing may not be a concern for many.

Price and availability of the BR1402F vary depending on the region and configuration. In the UK, the device starts at £439.99, while the model reviewed here, i3S15XAS SKU, is priced at £412.88 from Ballcom. Availability and pricing in the US are yet to be confirmed.

In terms of design, Asus has prioritized durability with the BR1402F. Although achieving complete robustness may be challenging, the device features a sturdy 2-in-1 design that balances the weight of the screen and base. The device is finished in Asus’ “Mineral Grey” dark plastic, with smooth wipe-clean surfaces and a textured underside for better grip.

Despite its robust build, the device weighs 1.56 kg (3.44 lbs), which may be cumbersome to carry all day. The 2-in-1 functionality allows for laptop and tablet modes, as well as other modes such as ‘tent’ for presentations. However, it should be noted that the keyboard does not retract when in tablet mode, although it is deactivated.

The BR1402F features a 360-degree hinge, placing all ports on the sides. Notably, there are no ports or slots on the front edge or rear spine. The device comes with a 13cm stylus housed in a garage down the left side, easily deployable with a spring-loaded click. However, the absence of a lanyard may be a concern for some educators.

The trackpad and keyboard of the BR1402F are of good size, with the trackpad featuring a flexible front edge for easy drag operations. The spill-resistant Chiclet keyboard offers enough travel for comfortable typing.

In terms of features, the device runs on the Intel Core i3-N305 processor, which supports eight cores and eight threads. However, it lacks the power of higher-performing processors like Core i7 or Ryzen 7. The device also lacks Windows Hello support, although it does offer an optional fingerprint reader on the power button.

The performance of the BR1402F leaves much to be desired. The Core i3-N305 processor struggles with the initial setup process, taking several hours to download and install updates. The port layout is also puzzling, with the charging port only supporting USB 2.0 specification and no Gen2 (10Gbps) USB ports.

Benchmark tests further highlight the device’s underwhelming performance, with lower scores compared to older Core i5 or Ryzen 5 processors. However, the BR1402F manages to achieve a Windows Experience Index score of 8.0, which is surprising given its slower processor.

Despite its limitations, the Asus BR1402F offers innovative features and durability suited for educational settings. While it may not be the most powerful device on the market, its reasonable price and longevity make it worth considering for schools and institutions.
