Six students from Jadavpur University, who have been implicated in the death of a first-year student, have been prohibited from entering the campus indefinitely. This decision follows the recommendation of the university’s anti-ragging committee and comes after two months of the students being in judicial custody at Presidency Jail.
In a notification issued on November 24, the university registrar announced that the six students will be banned from campus and hostel premises until they are cleared of all allegations. Despite the executive council approving the committee’s recommendation in October, the notification was only recently released, with no explanation for the delay provided by the registrar’s office.
The incident involving the fresher took place on August 9 when he fell from a second-floor balcony of the JU Main Hostel following a severe case of ragging. He passed away the next morning at a private hospital. The delay in implementing the committee’s recommendations has prompted dissatisfaction from the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association and senior faculty member Imankalyan Lahiri.
The six barred students are pursuing undergraduate degrees in disciplines such as economics, sociology, electrical engineering, civil engineering, and computer science. A total of thirteen individuals, including postgraduate students and a former PhD researcher, have been arrested in connection with the student’s death.
University English professor Manojit Mondal pointed out that the decision to ban the students should have been made much sooner.
