Nym Technology Unveils New VPN Software at Web Summit
Swiss startup Nym Technology has launched its new VPN software, NymVPN, promising stronger security while addressing issues of trust that arise with traditional VPN providers. CEO Harry Halpin and security consultant Chelsea Manning officially announced the launch of NymVPN during the Web Summit conference in Lisbon on November 16, 2023.
In an interview with Halpin during the conference, he stated, “There’s a danger with the traditional VPN model because users need to trust someone else’s computer with all of their internet traffic. This can become problematic if the person controlling the computer is not trustworthy.”
NymVPN employs Mixnet, a concept developed by cryptographer David Chaum and independently by Chelsea Manning, to scramble data packets, allowing users to hide within a crowd. Halpin explained, “The data passes through part of the network called nodes and is shuffled, essentially randomizing the traffic data and making it much harder for snoopers to identify the source of the data.” NymVPN currently has over 600 Mixnet servers worldwide.
The company has also developed a decentralized network operating on 2-hop servers, utilizing the WireGuard protocol for faster speeds, and incorporating blockchain technology for additional security and privacy. According to Halpin, this method decentralizes payments and routing of traffic, ensuring a no-logs network, and evading authorities’ control even in the face of potential future regulations affecting encryption.
Looking ahead, Nym Technology aims to expand the popularity of NymVPN across regions such as the Middle East, Eastern Europe, South America, and Asia. As more people join the NymVPN network, there will be increased anonymity and better security for all users.
In conclusion, Halpin noted, “Creating a VPN will always be an arms race. We don’t claim to be perfect, but we are committed to constantly improving.” NymVPN also plans to introduce a feature that quantifies how anonymous and private a user’s connection is based on the number of people connected to the network at any given time.
NymVPN’s emphasis on privacy and security, along with its innovative approach to decentralization and blockchain technology, sets it apart as a promising solution in the competitive VPN market. As the company continues to improve and expand its network, it seeks to establish itself as a trusted and reliable provider of VPN services.
