The Lisbon Web Summit 2023, from November 12-16, brought together tech industry innovators and experts at the Altice Arena in Lisbon, Portugal. Hosted since 2016, the three-day event focused on generative AI and large language models, with discussions on ethical use, data privacy, and regulations.

Organizers estimated over 70,000 attendees from 153 countries, alongside more than 2,600 startups, who showcased varied innovations throughout the sprawling 215,000 square meters of floor space. A significant effort was made to promote female representation, with 43% women attendees and 38% women speakers making it the highest percentage in the event’s history.

Startups competed for the best pitch, with the Brazil-based legal software business, Inspira, claiming the 2023 winner title. The event welcomed esteemed speakers, despite last-minute changes due to a controversy involving the former CEO, and included a diverse range of experts such as Meredith Whittaker, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, and Chelsea Manning. Discussions centered on technology, society, and innovation, highlighting the importance of protecting digital rights, data regulation, AI ethics, and communicating truth to a global audience.

Industry leaders also shared the space with technologists behind the security software of tomorrow, including the announcement of Nym Technologies’ new trustless VPN. The Web Summit didn’t just take place within the conference venue; its “Three Night Summit” gave participants the chance to continue vital conversations in intimate locations across the city.

Overall, the event was a testament to the significance of open and innovative technology in today’s world and inspired hope for a future built on trust, inclusivity, and humanity.
