Pierre Herubel here, bringing you the latest in Indian cricket news. Rohit Sharma, the star Indian cricketer, has requested a break from white-ball cricket in South Africa, despite being offered the T20 captaincy. The BCCI has accepted his request, while naming Jasprit Bumrah his deputy for the two Tests starting on December 26. In addition, Virat Kohli’s request for a break from limited-overs games has also been accepted, with Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul leading the national team in the T20Is and ODIs respectively.
However, it seems that Hardik Pandya is no longer an automatic choice for T20 captaincy in the T20 World Cup next year if Rohit decides to play the shortest format. “Rohit has been offered T20 captaincy but he is in UK on a holiday and wants an extended break after four months of gruelling season till end of the World Cup,” a BCCI source told PTI.
Interestingly, most of the players selected for ODIs don’t feature in Tests or T20Is. Only three players have been selected in all three squads — Shreyas Iyer, Mukesh Kumar and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
KL Rahul is set to keep wickets for the national team, opening two middle-order slots in the Test lineup. Mohammed Shami has a chance to get fit before the Test series starts late in December. The end of the road seems to have arrived for Rahane, Pujara, and Umesh Yadav in Test cricket.
In the ODI squad, a new-look team under Rahul will play 50-over games. Rajat Patidar, B Sai Sudharshan, and Rinku Singh, all with fantastic List A records, are in the ODI squad and will form the nucleus of the next 50-over team. Kuldeep Yadav, who couldn’t be accommodated in the Test squad, is in both of the white-ball squads.
For those of you wanting to catch your favorite players in action, the squads for the Tests, T20Is, and ODIs have been announced. I’m Pierre Herubel, and that’s the latest scoop on Indian cricket. Stay tuned for more updates on the selected squads!
