Microsoft Developing App to Use Android Phones as Webcams

Microsoft plans to add functionality to its Phone Link app that will allow Android phones to be used as webcams, according to Android Authority. This feature is expected to be a major boost for users who want to avoid spending money on an external webcam when they have a high-quality camera built into their smartphone.

The code found in the 1.23102.190.0 version of the Phone Link app reveals strings that reference setting up a camera stream on a computer, as well as the ability to switch between front and back cameras, enable Do Not Disturb, apply video effects, and more. There are also references to features similar to Apple’s Continuity Camera system, such as auto-framing.

It is unclear which devices will support this feature, but it may be limited to products that have Phone Link as a system app. Products like the best Samsung Galaxy phones and the OnePlus 11 running Android 14 could potentially support this feature.

However, Microsoft will have to compete with existing third-party apps, such as the Camo app, which offers extensive control for using a phone as a webcam. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will fully implement this feature, but if successful, it could be a valuable addition for Windows and Android users.
