Meta expands child safety features amid increased scrutiny

In response to growing concerns about sexual abuse content involving children on its platform, Meta has announced that it will be enhancing its child safety features.

The company stated that it is not only developing technology to combat these issues but also employing specialists dedicated to online child safety and collaborating with law enforcement and industry peers.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported how Instagram and Facebook show inappropriate and sexual content related to children to users. These platforms were also connected to a network of accounts dealing with child sexual abuse material, and there was evidence of pedophile accounts and groups within Facebook.

In the wake of these allegations, Meta has reassured the public that it is taking immediate and necessary steps to enhance its protections for children, with a focus on removing predators and the networks they use to connect. In a bid to prevent suspicious adult behavior, Meta also promised to prevent certain accounts from following each other and restrict their recommendations to one another in places such as Explore and Reels on Instagram.

The company emphasized that it has made strides in addressing suspicious behavior and content, citing a new automated enforcement effort that resulted in a significant increase in the deletion of Instagram Lives and Reels violating their policies.

Meta’s commitment to addressing these issues and its efforts to enhance child safety features are part of its ongoing pledge to create a safer environment for all users, especially children.
