Netflix’s new show, “Bodies,” combines dystopian detective drama with sci-fi storytelling, making it a must-watch for fans of both genres. The show revolves around a murder victim and the four detectives investigating the case across different timelines, spanning from the late 1800s to the early 2050s. With the tagline “Four detectives. Four timelines. One body,” “Bodies” promises a unique blend of time-traveling sci-fi, police procedural, murder mystery, and period drama.

Adapted from the graphic novel by Si Spencer, the show boasts a talented cast, including Amaka Okafor, Shira Haas (Emmy nominee), Kyle Soller (Olivier Award winner), and Stephen Graham (SAG Award winner). Graham’s involvement in the show alone is enough to capture attention, given his recent impressive performance in “Boiling Point,” an intense restaurant drama. However, even without his presence, “Bodies” would still be highly anticipated due to the graphic novel’s positive reviews.

According to Comics Alliance, the graphic novel itself encompasses four distinct genres in one storyline. Inspector Hillinghead’s tale represents a classic Victorian detective story, the 1940 narrative embodies a noir-style detective story set during WWII, the present-day yarn depicts a modern urban horror, and the 2050 timeline offers discombobulated science fiction elements.

Show creator Paul Tomalin describes “Bodies” as mind-snapping and compares it to “a wolf in detective drama’s clothing.” He explains that the show constantly shifts and transforms, making it unpredictable and exciting for viewers. The story kicks off with the discovery of a dead body in London, a familiar scenario for city detectives. However, it soon becomes clear that the same victim has been found by three other detectives across different time periods: 1890, 1941, and 30 years in the future. As each detective delves into the mystery, the timelines begin to intertwine, revealing a sinister conspiracy at the heart of it all, potentially involving Stephen Graham’s authoritarian leader character, as hinted in the trailer.

In addition to the captivating storytelling, fans are eager to see if the show captures the visual imagination of the graphic novel. The novel employed different artists for each story, resulting in distinct art styles for each timeline. This ambitious approach added depth and uniqueness to the storytelling. The adaptation to the screen by Tomalin is highly anticipated, as it has the potential to make “Bodies” one of the best Netflix shows of the year.

Mark your calendars! “Bodies” will be available for streaming on Netflix starting October 19th. Don’t miss the opportunity to delve into this intriguing and genre-blending series.
