Nvidia’s upcoming graphics card refreshes for Lovelace have sparked rumors and speculations. Recent chatter suggests the possibility of an RTX 4080 Super with an upgrade in VRAM. Harukaze5719, a reputable leaker, pointed to a report from IT Home, a Chinese tech site, which claims that the new version of the RTX 4080 will feature 20GB of GDDR6X video memory.
According to IT Home, Benchlife, another Chinese site, also reached out to Nvidia’s graphics card manufacturing partners in Asia and found that three new Lovelace models are all-but-confirmed. While nothing is official until Nvidia announces it, the sources make it highly likely. However, the exact details of these refreshed models remain unknown, except for the nugget of information that the RTX 4080 Super will have 20GB of VRAM, an upgrade from the previous 16GB.
The upgrade to 20GB of VRAM would entail a heftier memory bus, necessitating an upgrade from 256-bit to 320-bit. This would require the use of the AD102 GPU instead of the AD103 that powers the RTX 4080. Some believe that using the AD102 chip, which is also the engine of the RTX 4090, but cut down, would make sense compared to the Lovelace flagship. However, others doubt this switch, as there is room to fully utilize the AD103 with the RTX 4080 Super.
While all this information remains speculative, it seems increasingly likely that Nvidia will release multiple refreshed graphics cards, possibly including the RTX 4080 and 4070. If the rumors hold true, we may see the arrival of the RTX 4080 Super or even the RTX 4080 Ti in early 2024.
