Introducing the Sony HT-AX7: A Portable Bluetooth Surround Sound System

Sony has launched the HT-AX7, a unique and innovative portable Bluetooth-connected surround sound system. This device allows users to detach two rechargeable mini speakers from the main unit and place them behind to experience a truly immersive movie audio experience. Alternatively, users can place the speakers around the room to enjoy diffused music, unlike traditional single speakers.

Unlike other systems in its category, the Sony HT-AX7 does not promise 5.1-channel sound. Instead, it utilizes Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology to create a bubble of sound based on the location of the three units. The main unit features two speaker drivers and two passive bass radiators, while each satellite speaker contains a single speaker.

However, all this advanced technology comes at a price. The Sony HT-AX7 is priced at $499, which is significantly higher than the average portable Bluetooth speaker. Nevertheless, its unique features make it stand out in the market.

The HT-AX7’s compact size is another noteworthy characteristic. Measuring just 12 x 5.2 x 4.8 inches, this device is no larger than a loaf of bread. Its simple gray fabric covering adds a touch of elegance, and the high-quality matte plastic on top enhances its aesthetic appeal. The top panel consists of buttons for power, Bluetooth pairing, play/pause, volume control, and surround sound activation.

The two satellite speaker pucks are held in place by magnets, ensuring effortless attachment and detachment. They also feature a cleverly designed charging system to prevent accidental rotation. However, the magnets may not be strong enough, leading to unintentional detachment if the speaker is moved too quickly. Although the speakers are solidly built, the fabric covering is susceptible to damage upon impact.

Setting up the Sony HT-AX7 is a breeze. It can be connected to devices such as iPads and phones within a minute. The surround sound feature enhances the audio experience, but initially, the volume of the satellite speakers and the main speaker may be too low. Fortunately, Sony’s Home Entertainment Connect app allows users to adjust the volume of the rear speakers. A slight increase can greatly enhance the impact of the surround sound effect.

While the HT-AX7 is perfect for watching movies on tablets or phones, it truly shines when paired with a portable projector. The device can be connected to projectors via Bluetooth, providing users with genuine surround sound without the need for a permanent setup. The compact nature of the HT-AX7 allows for easy storage when not in use, making it a convenient companion for small projectors.

In terms of audio quality, the HT-AX7 excels in delivering impactful and well-balanced sound for movies. It offers sufficient bass for action sequences, clear dialog reproduction, and dynamic sound effects. The soundstage feels wider than expected, even when paired with a large projected screen.

The absence of lag between the front and rear speakers ensures a seamless audio experience. While the surround sound effect may not be as pronounced as high-end setups, it adds directionality and enhances the cinematic feeling. Additionally, the HT-AX7 offers two audio modes, Voice Mode and Night Mode, accessible through the app. These modes further optimize speech clarity and reduce bass and dynamic range to prevent disturbances in shared living spaces.

However, the Sony HT-AX7 falls short in music performance, particularly considering its high price tag. The bass-heavy sound profile restricts the mid-range and treble, resulting in a constrained soundstage. Comparing it directly to a Sonos Era 100 speaker, which is half the price, the Sony HT-AX7 lacks balance, detail, and energy in music playback.

Despite this drawback, the HT-AX7’s ability to disperse sound when the satellite pucks are placed around the room makes it ideal for parties. However, it’s worth noting that the satellites do not handle bass, leading to an incomplete dispersal of sound. Users may opt for alternative setups, such as investing in two Sonos Era 100 speakers or a more affordable option for a better dispersed audio experience.

Overall, the Sony HT-AX7 portable Bluetooth surround sound system offers unique and innovative features that set it apart from other devices in its category. While it excels in delivering an immersive movie-watching experience, its music performance may not be on par with its premium price. Nevertheless, for those seeking convenience, portability, and surround sound capabilities, the HT-AX7 proves to be a worthwhile investment.
