Intel’s highly anticipated Meteor Lake CPUs for laptops are set to launch in December. In a recent demonstration, Intel showcased the integrated graphics of one of these top-end Core Ultra processors running the popular game Dying Light 2 with the XeSS frame rate boosting technology enabled.
Using the Xe-LPG integrated GPU, Dying Light 2 experienced a significant boost in performance, with XeSS making the game run approximately 1.7 times faster on average at 1080p, compared to running without XeSS. The graphics were upscaled from 720p to 1080p using XeSS, resulting in a visually appealing and smooth gaming experience.
The Xe-LPG integrated graphics feature up to 8 Xe-Cores, which is equivalent to the number of cores found in the existing discrete Arc A370M laptop GPU.
This demonstration is especially noteworthy because it marks the first time Intel has shown XeSS running on an Xe integrated GPU. It suggests that Intel is increasingly confident in promoting this combination as a viable solution for gaming laptops. The goal is to achieve performance similar to that of a discrete graphics card, eliminating the need for a separate GPU.
Although this solution is primarily aimed at lower-end laptop GPUs, it is a significant step towards integrated graphics becoming a realistic option for demanding gaming on laptops. By eliminating the need for a discrete graphics card, laptops can become more affordable for consumers while also offering improved battery life.
However, it’s important to note that XeSS only works with the latest Intel (Xe) GPUs, and support from games is also required. Fortunately, over 80 games are now compatible with XeSS, and the number continues to grow.
This development paints a promising picture for the future of integrated GPUs in laptops, particularly for mid-range gaming notebooks. Intel’s efforts with XeSS have garnered positive feedback compared to other technologies like FSR, and the company continues to make progress with driver updates.
Looking ahead, Intel’s upcoming Battlemage GPUs show great potential, but the company must be cautious to avoid any major setbacks similar to the issues encountered with the current Arc graphics driver and the game Starfield.
