Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has pledged to provide free education in government schools and colleges in Chhattisgarh, as well as an annual allowance of Rs 4,000 for tendu leaves collectors if his party remains in power in the state. Speaking at an election rally in the Bhanupratappur assembly constituency in Kanker district, Gandhi questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentions the Other Backward Class (OBC) in his speeches but opposes conducting a caste census. He assured that a caste census would be conducted if the Congress wins power at the national level.
Bhanupratappur is one of the 20 constituencies scheduled to vote on November 7 in the first phase of the Chhattisgarh elections, with the second phase set for November 17.
Gandhi emphasized the Congress’ commitment to education, stating, “We are going to take a major step for you which we call ‘KG to PG’. From kindergarten to post-graduation, free education will be provided in government institutions to students if the Congress retains power in the state. They will not have to pay a single penny.”
Furthermore, Gandhi announced that tendu leaves collectors would receive an annual allowance of Rs 4,000 under the Rajiv Gandhi Protsahan Yojana if the Congress forms the government in the state. This announcement holds significant importance for the Bhanupratappur seat, which falls within the tribal-dominated Bastar region.
Advocating for a caste census, Gandhi criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating, “Narendra Modi ji uses the term ‘OBC’ in every speech, but why is he afraid of a caste census? OBCs need to be aware as they are being let down.”
Gandhi also declared the Congress’ intention to conduct a caste census nationwide if the party comes to power in Delhi. He affirmed, “We have already made this promise for Chhattisgarh.”
Taking aim at the BJP-led Centre, Gandhi accused it of working in the interest of a few industrialists while the Congress prioritizes the welfare of farmers, Dalits, laborers, and Adivasis.
Highlighting the Congress’ track record, Gandhi claimed that key promises made by the party prior to the last assembly polls have been fulfilled in Chhattisgarh.
Furthermore, Gandhi expressed his objection to the BJP’s use of the term ‘vanvasi’ instead of ‘Adivasi’ when referring to tribals. He viewed this language choice as an insult to Adivasis, their culture, history, and language.
During his speech, Gandhi paused momentarily and walked to the other side of the stage with a bottle of water after someone appeared to faint. He returned to the podium and inquired about the person’s well-being.
