Apple’s new FineWoven cases for the iPhone 15 have been receiving mixed reviews. Notable tech reviewers, such as MobileReviewsEh and The Verge, have criticized the FineWoven cases, with some calling them “categorically terrible.” However, TechRadar’s Senior Phones Editor, Alex Walker-Todd, and I have been testing the Pacific Blue FineWoven case for the iPhone 15 Pro, and while we share some of the same criticisms, we believe there are still some redeeming qualities to Apple’s environmentally-friendly protection option.
FineWoven is part of Apple’s commitment to sustainability, replacing leather with a “carbon-neutral” material that is used in a range of MagSafe accessories. The goal is to provide a more ethical and environmentally-friendly option for consumers. However, this commitment to sustainability seems to have come at the expense of quality.
The FineWoven cases are made of a “durable microtwill” material that is supposed to feel like suede. Unfortunately, this material is neither durable nor suede-like. It easily scratches and shows wear from normal use, which is disappointing for a product that is not only meant to protect the iPhone but also serve as a style accessory. Additionally, the FineWoven material feels clammy in the hand, making it an uncomfortable choice for extended use.
In terms of appearance, the FineWoven cases offer a sleek fit and come in a variety of colors. The sides of the cases have a hard plastic feel, which adds sturdiness and a comfortable grip. The metallic finish on the buttons adds a touch of elegance, and there is a nice amount of give in each button. Despite these positives, the overall quality of the FineWoven cases falls short of expectations.
While Apple’s decision to move away from leather is commendable, it’s difficult to justify spending money on a case that does not meet basic standards of durability and comfort. There is still room for improvement in Apple’s quest for high-quality sustainability. In the meantime, consumers may want to explore other protective case options for their new iPhone 15.
