Microsoft Takes Aggressive Approach to Promote Edge Browser
In an effort to promote its browser, Edge, Microsoft has taken some interesting and potentially controversial steps to steer users away from its arch-rival, Google Chrome. Users attempting to download the Google Chrome installer using Edge, the default web browser in Windows 10 and Windows 11, are now required to participate in a poll disclosing their reasons for choosing Chrome.
Edge already bombards users with ads, banners, and pop-ups encouraging them to keep Edge as their default browser. However, Microsoft believes it hasn’t exerted enough pressure on its users and has implemented this new tactic to gather information and potentially persuade them to switch to Edge.
NeoWin made the discovery when trying to download Chrome using Microsoft Edge. As users open the Chrome download and wait, a sidebar pops up, presenting a poll that asks why they are interested in another browser. While the poll’s wording may appear civil, it can be seen as an aggressive and presumptive move on Microsoft’s part.
The poll includes the following question and possible answers:
– Can you please take a minute to tell us why you are trying another browser?
– I can’t search Google easily.
– I can’t access my Google documents.
– I don’t have my favorites or passwords here.
– Too many ads and pop-ups.
– I don’t like the news feed.
– It’s too slow.
– My websites don’t work on Microsoft Edge.
– My reason is not listed.
However, this poll fails to address all the popular user complaints about Edge, such as the poor quality press stories in its news feed. While users can disable the news feed, there are other pressing issues that Microsoft should prioritize, such as the constant suggestions and pop-ups promoting its revamped products and services. While Microsoft may have good intentions in collecting this information to improve its products, the method of collection may not sit well with users.
Users value the illusion of choice and dislike being bombarded with constant messaging and advertising. Microsoft recently made significant investments in OpenAI and integrating artificial intelligence technology into its products, aiming for a return on investment. However, users appreciate when a company can provide value without overwhelming them with relentless marketing.
As Microsoft continues to pursue user engagement, it should aim for a more user-centered approach that respects their preferences and ensures a positive browsing experience.
