US-based consumer technology company Honeywell has announced the development of innovative solutions to address safety concerns in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. The company’s lithium-ion battery safety sensors are designed to detect potential battery fires, offering crucial protection for drivers.
“With more than 10 million EVs sold worldwide last year, we recognize their importance in shaping a sustainable future of travel,” said Sarah Martin, president of Honeywell Sensing & Safety Technologies.
The Indian EV market is expected to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 49% from 2022 to 2030. Furthermore, the use of electric scooters has increased significantly in India, with over half of the country’s three-wheeler vehicle registrations in 2021 being electric. It is projected that electric two-wheelers will grow by 27.3% to reach $6.1 billion by 2030. As a result, this sector may require an additional 10 million direct jobs and 50 million allied jobs by 2030.
Ashish Modi, president of Honeywell India, expressed the company’s commitment to driving the electric mobility revolution in India through enhanced safety standards and innovative solutions. Honeywell’s battery safety sensors, when integrated into EV and scooter battery packs, can detect thermal runaway risks, enabling early warning for passengers and ensuring compliance with international battery fire safety standards.
In collaboration with Nexceris, a developer of lithium-ion gas detection solutions, Honeywell is also working on sensors to detect early thermal runaway indicators in EV and scooter batteries. This proactive approach can prevent costly property damage and potential injuries to drivers.
Additionally, Honeywell provides a range of electrical safety gear and gas detection technologies, including portable and fixed solutions. They also offer personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, face shields, and dielectric boots for high-risk areas involved in EV battery production processes, including electrode mixing, coating, drying, and cell finishing.
With these comprehensive safety solutions, Honeywell aims to support the booming EV market and contribute to the advancement of electric mobility around the world.
