Apple has officially released watchOS 10.1 for Apple Watch users globally. This update brings the much-anticipated Double Tap gesture to the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.
The Double Tap gesture allows users to perform various functions and navigate menus on their wearables by tapping their index finger to their thumb twice in quick succession. This feature is particularly useful when the user’s other hand is occupied with tasks such as holding a dog leash, carrying groceries, or even rock climbing.
According to Apple, the Double Tap gesture complements existing gestures like tap, swipe, raise to wake, and cover to mute, making the Apple Watch more user-friendly and intuitive. Users now have more options to interact with their smartwatches.
It is important to note that the Double Tap gesture is separate from the existing AssistiveTouch feature, which enables users with physical limitations to control their Apple Watch through pinching and clenching actions. AssistiveTouch is available on all Apple Watch models since the Apple Watch 4, including the Apple Watch SE and the original Apple Watch Ultra.
To use the Double Tap gesture, users must have either an Apple Watch Series 9 or an Apple Watch Ultra 2, as the latest S9 chip is required to recognize the gesture. Additionally, users need to update their devices to watchOS 10.1, which can be done through the “Settings > Software update” menu on the Apple Watch.
To activate the Double Tap gesture, users should first raise their wrist to wake the screen, unless there is an incoming call already displayed. Then, they need to quickly tap their index finger and thumb together twice. It should be noted that the gesture will not work if Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus is enabled.
The Double Tap gesture enables users to perform various operations, including answering calls, replying to messages, scrolling through widget stacks, pausing a timer, snoozing an alarm, playing and pausing music, and taking primary actions on incoming notifications.
Users can also customize the Double Tap function to some extent. For example, they can choose between pausing music or skipping to the next track. This can be done by navigating to the watch’s Settings, tapping on Gestures, and selecting Double Tap to configure the desired action. Additionally, users have the option to disable the feature if they prefer not to use it.
Overall, this update enhances the functionality and usability of Apple’s smartwatches, providing users with more intuitive ways to interact with their devices.
