Introducing the Retro Camp Snap Camera: A Step Back in Time

By Pierre Herubel

I recently stumbled upon the Camp Snap camera on my Instagram feed, and it immediately caught my attention. It wasn’t just the soothing voiceover or the picturesque scenes of America that drew me in. It was the camera’s unique selling point – the absence of a screen.

As I watched a video about the camera, which was originally designed for kids at summer camp with limited screen time, I realized that the Camp Snap had the potential to appeal to a much wider audience. While it may be categorized as a camera for kids, I believe it offers a refreshing experience for anyone seeking a break from excessive screen use.

The Camp Snap camera is a clever reimagining of the single-use disposable camera, with a retro-inspired design and low-tech features. It aims to bring us back to a simpler time when we had to wait patiently to see our photos. Unlike modern cameras, there is no instant review of your shots – you have to connect the camera to your computer via its USB-C port to upload and view them, just like retrieving developed film from a lab.

One of the standout features of the Camp Snap is its ability to store approximately 2,000 digital 8MP photos on a TF memory card, which is similar to a microSD card. This eliminates the need for film and offers a cost-effective solution in a time where film prices have skyrocketed.

In terms of usability, the Camp Snap is incredibly user-friendly and suitable for the whole family. Even my three lively children had no trouble operating the camera, and I was impressed by its durability – the makers claim it is “drop-proof.”

The camera features a viewfinder, although the LED photo counter can sometimes interfere with the view. It also has a built-in LED flash, which can be switched on or off, although it could benefit from being more powerful. The camera’s rear has a thumb groove for added grip, and the USB-C port doubles as a charging port. With its low power consumption, the battery should last several days with moderate use.

To power on the camera, simply press and hold the shutter button, and you’ll hear a cheerful confirmation sound. Each time you take a photo, the camera emits a shutter noise, adding a fun element to the experience, particularly for children.

However, it’s important to manage your expectations regarding image quality. The Camp Snap’s 2560 x 1920 pixel image sensor and fixed focus lens produce photos that are comparable to those taken with disposable film cameras from previous years. In today’s standards, the image quality may be considered poor. It works best in well-lit conditions and has a focus range of approximately 1m to infinity, making selfies at arm’s length possible but closer shots blurry.

If I were to offer a few design suggestions, I would recommend moving the LED photo counter to the side to avoid glare when using the viewfinder and adding a loop for a wrist strap.

Despite its limitations, the Camp Snap camera offers a unique opportunity to disconnect from screens and connect with the world around us. It has reminded me of the joy of capturing moments with family and friends without the distractions of instant gratification.

The Camp Snap camera is currently available in the US and Europe, priced at $55 / £45 (excluding shipping costs) on the Camp Snap website. It comes in various colors, including Brown, Aqua, Black, Forest Green, White, and Pink. The makers plan to expand sales to other regions, including Australia.

In closing, the Camp Snap camera has inspired me to make a conscious effort to use my professional mirrorless camera without relying on its vari-angle screen. While it may be basic in its functionality, the Camp Snap concept has struck a chord with me, and I believe it will do the same for many others.

Should you buy the Camp Snap camera?

Buy it if you’re looking for a screen-free camera experience that encourages real connections and a sense of nostalgia. The Camp Snap offers simplicity and durability for all ages.

Don’t buy it if you prioritize high-quality images and advanced features. The Camp Snap’s image quality may not meet your expectations in comparison to modern smartphones.

How I tested the Camp Snap camera:

I carried the Camp Snap camera in my pocket for several weeks, capturing quick snapshots of everyday moments with my family. I also allowed my children to use the camera and observed their experience using the viewfinder.
