Andhra Pradesh Braces for Landfall of Cyclonic Storm ‘Michaung’ as Heavy Rains Lash Parts of the State
Parts of Andhra Pradesh were hit with heavy rains on Monday in anticipation of the approaching cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’. The state government has issued an alert to eight districts and is preparing for the impact as the storm nears the southern coastal region.
Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy convened a review meeting on Monday to discuss measures to address the cyclone’s impact and mobilize relief efforts. An alert has been conveyed to the districts of Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema, and Kakinada.
The severe cyclonic storm is projected to make landfall near Bapatla on Tuesday around noon, bringing winds of up to 100 km per hour, with gusts of up to 110 kmph. The weather system is expected to persist until December 7 and then transition into a deep depression.
To support relief measures, the Chief Minister announced financial assistance to affected districts and has deployed senior IAS officers as special officers in the affected areas. Evacuation efforts are underway at 181 relief camps, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed in the affected districts.
The state is also focusing on safeguarding crops, with the evacuation and transportation of affected people, medical and food needs of evacuees, and distribution of financial assistance and food rations being prioritized. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has temporarily suspended access to Sri Kapilathirtham waterfalls as a result of the heavy rains.
The severe cyclonic storm is expected to intensify gradually and is forecasted to cross between Nellore and Machilipatnam, close to Bapatla, during the forenoon of December 5. TDP general secretary Nara Lokesh has postponed his ‘Yuva Galam’ padayatra due to the inclement weather conditions.
