Bomb threats prompt panic at 68 Bengaluru schools, prompt police response
Bengaluru was rocked by panic on Friday when 68 private schools in and around the city received emails warning of bomb threats on their premises, according to local police. The threats sparked alarm among school staff and parents, who immediately alerted the police.
The authorities were quick to dispatch bomb disposal squads and anti-sabotage check teams to the schools, but officials indicated that the bomb threats could be a hoax. Despite this, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has instructed police to thoroughly investigate the email and provide adequate security to schools and temples as a precautionary measure.
The email, which was reportedly sent from an address linked to “[email protected],” claimed that bombs had been placed in Bengaluru schools and threatened to harm children and staff. State Home Minister G Parameshwara reassured the public that authorities were actively verifying the source of the threats and that similar emails in the past were found to be hoaxes.
Despite no suspicious objects being found at any of the schools, students and staff were evacuated as a precaution. City Police Commissioner B Dayananda described the situation as mostly likely a hoax, given the lack of physical evidence.
While officials have yet to determine the source of the threats, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar urged residents not to worry, promising that the police were actively investigating the matter. Concerned parents were reassured by CM Siddaramaiah, who instructed police to tighten security measures and conduct thorough checks at the affected schools.
As the government and law enforcement continue to address the situation, the Opposition criticized the handling of the bomb threats, citing concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. The BJP and JD(S) have called for a comprehensive investigation and immediate action to protect students, teachers, and parents alike.
