October marked the anniversary of the launch of OpenAI’s AI chatbot, ChatGPT, which was then given its biggest update to date. The upgrades were announced at OpenAI’s first developer conference, DevDay, on November 6. Despite its primary target audience being developers, similar events such as Apple’s WWDC, typically carry news of significant interest to the average tech fan and DevDay was no exception.
In a race with other AI chatbots like Bing Chat, Google Bard, and more, ChatGPT requires a rapid pace of innovation in order to maintain a competitive advantage. Throughout this year, ChatGPT received a powerful new GPT-4 model alongside substantial improvements such as the introduction of plug-ins that connect it to other web services, and integration with OpenAI’s Dall-E 3 image generator.
But now OpenAI has introduced even more significant features available for ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Their creation of custom AI chatbots is now possible with a new ‘Create a GPT’ option. This allows subscribers to tailor a version of ChatGPT to their specific needs, making it possible to create chatbots for various uses, including in businesses or for the average user.
Furthermore, OpenAI is set to launch the GPT Store, similar to an ‘App Store’ for AI chatbots, the marketplace is intended to spotlight the most useful and delightful GPTs, ultimately providing developers the ability to earn money based on the number of people using their GPTs.
Another exciting announcement made at DevDay is the introduction of the GPT-4 Turbo model. This new model offers improvements such as being trained on fresher data up to April 2023 and a substantial boost to the chatbot’s ‘context window’.
For professional users of ChatGPT, the company introduced a ‘Copyright Shield’ as a protective measure against legal claims around copyright infringement. The shield aims to cover legal costs that may arise in disputes concerning copyright issues.
