Amazon Introduces Passkey Feature for Enhanced Security and Convenience

In a move to enhance security and user convenience, Amazon has officially launched support for passkeys on its desktop website and iOS app. This new feature allows users to log into their Amazon accounts using fingerprints, facial scanning, or PINs instead of traditional passwords, making it more secure and less susceptible to phishing attacks.

Passkey support was first quietly introduced by Amazon in mid-October, initially requiring two-factor authentication. However, the company has now streamlined the process, eliminating the need for this additional step. The same technology will also be extended to the Amazon app on Android, although no specific timeline has been provided.

Setting up passkeys on Amazon is a straightforward process. To enable this feature, users can follow these quick steps:

1. Go to Amazon and log into your account.
2. Select “Account settings” and choose “Login & Security.”
3. Click on the “Create your passkey” option.

For a more detailed guide on how to create a passkey on Amazon, follow these step-by-step instructions:

1. Log into your Amazon account and click on your username to access profile settings.
2. Choose “Login & Security” from the menu.
3. Click the “Set up” button beside Passkey.
4. On the next page, click the “Setup” button again.
5. A window will appear prompting you to create a passkey. You can choose a PIN or opt for fingerprint or facial recognition.
6. Once you’ve entered your passkey, a confirmation window will pop up, indicating that it has been saved.
7. If desired, you can add another passkey by selecting the “Add a passkey” button. This login can be saved on a security key or mobile device.

The process for creating a passkey on the iOS app is identical to that on the desktop. Simply sign in, tap the “Your Account” button in the settings, go to “Login & Security” under Account Settings, and follow the same steps.

It is currently unclear whether the passkey rollout is international or limited to specific countries. Additionally, it is unknown whether other Amazon mobile apps, such as Prime Video, will also receive the same security upgrade. We have reached out to Amazon for further clarification, and this article will be updated accordingly.

While the introduction of passkeys is undoubtedly a step toward enhanced security, it also offers added convenience for users. With Black Friday approaching, this feature will make it easier for shoppers to log into their Amazon accounts and take advantage of early deals.
