The official trailer for the movie “Pain Hustlers” has been released by Netflix, and it seems to embrace the comparisons with the popular film “Wolf of Wall Street” that are circulating. Starring Emily Blunt and Marvel actor Chris Evans, “Pain Hustlers” initially received a teaser in September that sparked speculation and discussion about its similarities to “Wolf of Wall Street”. The latest trailer only reinforces this perception, indicating that director David Yates, known for his work on “Harry Potter”, is indeed aiming for a similar tone.
“Pain Hustlers” is based on Evan Hughes’ book of the same name, set for release in 2022. The story revolves around Liza Drake, played by Emily Blunt, a high school dropout who is hired by a pharmaceutical start-up’s sales representative, Pete Brenner, portrayed by Chris Evans. As Drake becomes aware of the company’s illegal activities, led by the unstable CEO Jack Neel, played by Andy Garcia, she is faced with moral dilemmas and must question her own principles.
While “Pain Hustlers” may not have the same cinematic quality as “Wolf of Wall Street”, its star power and gripping crime-based drama suggest it may still be a hit for Netflix. However, early reviews suggest otherwise. According to Rotten Tomatoes, which has collected 24 reviews so far, “Pain Hustlers” is projected to be a disappointment with a critical score of only 25%. This poor reception may dampen Netflix’s hopes for the film’s success, despite the talented cast behind it.
Nevertheless, the critical reception of a film does not always align with its popularity among viewers, particularly for movies released exclusively on streaming platforms like Netflix. Take the example of “Red Notice”, released in 2021 and starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot. Although it received a dismal 37% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, it has become the most-streamed Netflix movie of all time, with over 230.9 million views and 454.2 million streamed hours as of October 1, 2023.
Given this precedent, there is still hope for “Pain Hustlers”. Despite its initial negative reception, it may resonate more positively with audiences when it premieres on October 27. In fact, it was one of our top picks from Netflix’s ‘Fall 2023’ movie lineup, so we remain optimistic about its potential success. Only time will tell if “Pain Hustlers” can overcome its critical score and capture the attention of viewers worldwide.
