Days after a hospital in Gaza was attacked, India has called for strict adherence to international humanitarian law. In a media briefing, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi expressed India’s concern over civilian casualties and the humanitarian crisis resulting from the attack. He condemned the attack and emphasized the importance of the international community coming together to combat terrorism.
Regarding the Palestine issue, Bagchi reiterated India’s stance in favor of direct negotiations for a two-state solution. The attack on the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza on Tuesday resulted in approximately 470 reported casualties, leading to widespread international condemnation.
Palestinian authorities attributed the explosion at the hospital to Israeli airstrikes, while Israel claimed it was caused by a misfired rocket launched by the militant group Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock at the loss of lives in the attack and called for those responsible for civilian casualties to be held accountable.
The conflict stems from ongoing attacks against Israel by Hamas militants since October 7. In response, Israel has launched a large-scale counteroffensive. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, over 3,300 people have been killed and 12,000 wounded in Gaza since the conflict began. In Israel, approximately 1,400 people have been killed and 3,800 injured in Hamas’ deadly attacks. Additionally, nearly 200 individuals have been abducted by Hamas.
