Nvidia Rumored to Scrap RTX 4080 Graphics Card, but Skepticism Remains
There are rumors circulating that Nvidia may be considering abandoning the release of the highly anticipated RTX 4080 graphics card. However, given the source of the rumor and its lack of credibility, it is important to approach this news with caution.
The rumor originated from IT Home, a Chinese tech site known for its unreliable track record. Bopantang news, another source in China, speculated that the RTX 4080 may be “discontinued” and replaced with the RTX 4080 Super or 4080 Ti, depending on Nvidia’s naming scheme.
It is worth noting that IT Home recently reported on another rumor, which stated that Nvidia has three new models of Lovelace graphics cards in development. One of these models is believed to be the RTX 4080 Super, featuring 20GB of GDDR6X VRAM, according to Benchlife, another Chinese source.
While there is persistent speculation that sales of the RTX 4080 have been lackluster since its launch, it is important to consider the timing of these rumors. YouTube leaker Moore’s Law is Dead (MLID), a reliable source of GPU and CPU rumors, recently stated that his retail sources have reported extremely poor sales for the RTX 4080.
Considering this information, it is conceivable that Nvidia is contemplating canceling the RTX 4080 instead of allowing it to struggle in the market. MLID suggests that Nvidia may increase the price of the RTX 4090 to align with the surge in demand in China, where the GPU is about to be banned. This strategy would make the RTX 4080 appear more attractive and help maintain its market value.
It is important to clarify that the rumors do not suggest a complete cancellation of the RTX 4080. Instead, it is likely that Nvidia would gradually reduce production rather than halt it entirely. Completely canceling the RTX 4080 would be embarrassing for Nvidia, especially considering the previous cancellation of the 12GB model of the variant.
Other rumors have not mentioned any cancellation of cards, and MLID believes that the RTX 4080 will coexist with the new Super or Ti versions and RTX 4070 refreshes. This strategy would position the new releases as more appealing options when they hit the market, assuming that the price of the RTX 4080 increases as rumored.
According to IT Home’s source, RTX 4080 prices are expected to rise due to diminishing stock as production winds down.
The upcoming months will provide more clarity and shed light on these speculations. It is evident that Nvidia has potential contenders ready to compete for a spot in the best graphics cards list. However, the final decisions regarding the Lovelace range and any potential adjustments are yet to be confirmed by Team Green.
