According to the lawsuit, Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, forwarded a request from Instagram’s wellbeing team to invest more in addressing the teen wellbeing areas of problematic behavior, bullying, harassment, connections, and suicide and self-injury. However, Zuckerberg ignored these calls for months, while publicly advocating for investment in wellbeing. Moreover, the lawsuit accuses Zuckerberg of rejecting internal efforts to prohibit cosmetic surgery filters, claiming there was “clear demand” for the filters and falsely denying any data suggesting their harmful effects. A Meta spokesperson responded to this complaint by stating that Meta has over 30 tools and resources to keep teens safe and criticized the lawsuit’s selective use of quotes. This lawsuit reveals the ongoing legal battles faced by Meta, and the dissonance between public statements and internal decisions regarding teen wellbeing and safety.
