Apple Under Fire After Canceling Jon Stewart’s Show
A bipartisan House committee has sent a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook, demanding an explanation for the decision to cancel Jon Stewart’s show, “The Problem with Jon Stewart,” on Apple TV+. Lawmakers are concerned that the cancellation may have been influenced by Apple’s interests in the Chinese market, particularly in relation to content critical of China.
The former “Daily Show” host reportedly wanted full creative control over the show, but Apple executives expressed concerns over potential content relating to China and AI, prompting Stewart and Apple to part ways. The House committee is now asking Apple to brief its members by December 15 on this matter.
The committee members also called on Apple to publicly commit to allowing content critical of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on its streaming platform and other services. They expressed concerns about the negative impact of Chinese censorship on the American creative industry and urged Apple to reduce its dependence on China.
This move comes as tensions between China and the US continue to rise, with Apple finding itself in the middle. The House committee was established in January to address the threats posed by China to the US.
This latest request for information has put a spotlight on Apple’s business dealings in China, where almost a fifth of its revenues come from, and where the majority of its products are manufactured. Apple has yet to respond to the request for comment from Business Insider.
