Why is this Frankenstein adaptation called Creature?

If you’re in the mood for a more thought-provoking monster movie, then look no further than Çağan Irmak’s adaptation, Creature. Described by Netflix as a re-imagining of Mary Shelley’s classic Frankenstein, this limited series brings a fresh perspective to the story while staying true to its themes of obsession and grief.

Set in Ottoman-era Istanbul, Creature follows the journey of Ziya, a young and rebellious medical student. Motivated by the loss of loved ones to incurable epidemics, Ziya aspires to become a renowned doctor and save lives. In collaboration with fellow doctor Ihsan, he embarks on a forbidden experiment that blurs the line between genius and insanity, resulting in horrifying consequences over the course of eight episodes.

As shown in the captivating trailer below, Creature promises to deliver an intriguing viewing experience.

The decision to name this Frankenstein adaptation Creature stays true to Shelley’s original work. In her book, the creature created by Doctor Frankenstein is only referred to as “the creature,” “the wretch,” or “the thing” – intentionally avoiding any humanizing labels. Additionally, since the scientist’s name is not Frankenstein, it would be inaccurate to continue referring to it as such.

Anticipation for Creature is high, with hopes that it will avoid clichéd horror tropes and fully embrace the darker elements of Shelley’s narrative. Themes such as grief, the arrogance of defying death, the loss of control, and the dangers of playing God are expected to take center stage. Brace yourself for a chilling journey that won’t include a laugh track.

The true horror of the Frankenstein story lies not in the monster itself, as commonly portrayed in popular culture, but in the forgotten or overlooked half of its title: The Modern Prometheus. This refers to the man who foolishly believed he could steal fire from the gods. In our current era, marked by pressing issues like climate change and autonomous weapons, the story remains as relevant as when Shelley first shared it in 1818.

Creature will be available for streaming on Netflix starting from 20th October.
