YouTube is in the process of testing two new experimental AI tools that will allow users to create short songs utilizing a text prompt or their own vocal sample. The first tool, called Dream Track, harnesses the voices of nine mainstream artists to generate 30-second music tracks for YouTube Shorts. Users can enter a text prompt into the tool and select a singer from a carousel of options such as John Legend, Sia, and T-Pain. These artists have given consent to be part of the program.

The release of Dream Track was initially limited to a small group of American content creators on mobile devices, with no information available on when it will have a wider release or a desktop version. The second experiment, Music AI Tools, can generate bite-sized tracks by transforming an uploaded vocal sample or input from a MIDI keyboard.

Google is currently testing music AI tools with a select group of artists, songwriters, and producers in YouTube’s Music AI Incubator program. The platform aims to offer new ways for creative users to express themselves and empower fledgling musicians, though some artists have expressed caution about generative AI in music.

YouTube says it is working to ensure that the broader music community will benefit from these tools, while also respecting the perspectives of artists. Overall, Dream Track and Music AI Tools are poised to provide new opportunities for creativity, but it remains to be seen how music creators will respond to this new technology.
