Shreyas Iyer Becomes Fastest Indian Batsman to Reach 2000 ODI Runs
Mumbai, India – Shreyas Iyer, the talented Indian batsman, has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the fastest Indian player to reach 2000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Iyer accomplished this feat in his 49th innings in the format, surpassing Shikhar Dhawan, who achieved the milestone in his 48th innings back in November 2014 against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad.
After enduring several challenging months due to a nerve compression injury in his back, Iyer was out of action for six months earlier this year. However, he made a successful comeback during the Asia Cup a couple of months ago.
In the recently concluded ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, Iyer had a slow start, scoring a zero in the first match against Australia and 25 against Afghanistan. However, he bounced back with an unbeaten 53 against Pakistan, followed by a couple of low scores. In the match against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, Iyer played a crucial innings of 82 off 56 balls, helping India post a massive total of 357/8 in 50 overs.
Iyer credited his teammates, opener Shubman Gill (92) and captain Virat Kohli (88), for laying a solid foundation for India’s big score. He mentioned that their inputs were invaluable and helped him during his innings.
Speaking to the official broadcaster after his fine knock, Iyer mentioned, “Virat bhai and Gill set the platform very well. After that, KL Rahul and I came in and played our game. We got a message that the ball was holding on a bit, so we had to bide our time to play our strokes.”
He further added that it was a good wicket to bat on and he was able to rotate the strike easily at the start to get settled. Iyer reached his half-century off just 35 deliveries.
With this innings, Iyer has scored a total of 2017 runs in 49 innings of 54 matches, including 16 half-centuries and three centuries. He boasts an impressive average of 45.84 and a strike rate of 98.19.
Iyer’s knock of 82 at his home ground not only showcased his batting prowess but also highlighted his ability to provide a late boost to the innings with his power-hitting. In the last 10 overs, he contributed 97 runs, forming a crucial 60-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja.
Shreyas Iyer’s performance has once again proven his talent and his ability to make significant contributions to the Indian team. With his remarkable achievement of reaching 2000 ODI runs in just 49 innings, Iyer has set a new standard for batsmen in Indian cricket.
