Title: OpenAI Chief Scientist Speculates on the Possibility of Humans Merging with AI in the Future

Subtitle: Ilya Sutskever discusses the potential for human augmentation to compete with superintelligent machines

In a recent interview with MIT Technology Review, OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever shared his thoughts on the future of AI and its potential impact on humanity. Sutskever believes that as the emergence of superintelligent artificial intelligence becomes a reality, some individuals may choose to merge with AI in order to remain competitive.

Sutskever acknowledges the challenges posed by superintelligent AI and questions the role of human beings in a world dominated by smarter machines. He suggests that merging with AI could be a viable option for those who wish to stay ahead. “Once you overcome the challenge of rogue AI, then what? Is there even room for human beings in a world with smarter AIs?” he ponders.

While currently working on OpenAI’s “superalignment” project, which aims to develop fail-safes against rogue AI, Sutskever contemplates how humanity can keep pace with considerably more intelligent AI. He suggests that human augmentation, or becoming “part AI,” could be a potential solution.

Sutskever acknowledges the idea of merging with AI may initially appeal only to the boldest and most adventurous individuals. However, it remains uncertain whether others would follow suit. The open-ended nature of this possibility raises a host of ethical and existential questions.

Despite these speculations, Sutskever remains uncertain about his personal inclination towards merging with AI. “I don’t know,” he admits. “But it’s something I think about. The true answer is: Maybe.”

It is worth noting that Sutskever is not the first tech figure to explore the concept of humans merging with AI. Visionary entrepreneur Elon Musk has expressed a similar vision through his brain implant company Neuralink. Musk envisions achieving a symbiosis between humans and AI to prevent them from being left behind by superintelligent machines.

However, the practicality and feasibility of merging with AI remain uncertain. It is an area of ongoing scientific and philosophical debate. Scientists and experts continue to explore the potential benefits and risks associated with such a merging.

As for OpenAI, the organization did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment on this matter.
