Google has rolled out passkeys as a secure alternative to passwords for its accounts. Passkeys use biometric data like fingerprints or facial recognition to make logins more secure.
To get started with passkeys, users need a Google account, a biometric data reader (like a fingerprint scanner or a facial recognition camera), an up-to-date device and a supported web browser. Users can then create a passkey by going to the Google account settings, clicking on Security, and then Passkeys. After choosing to store the passkey on the device or the browser, entering biometric data through a fingerprint reader or facial recognition camera will create the passkey. Passkeys can be managed and customized in the Google account settings.
If users want to revert to using a password for login, they can go to the Google account settings and click on Security to disable passkeys as the default method.
Passkeys not only offer better security than passwords, but they also make it easier to manage logins. As more websites adopt passkeys, they may eventually replace passwords entirely, improving overall online security.
