Indian captain Rohit Sharma has equalled AB de Villiers’ record for hitting the most ODI sixes in a calendar year during the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 match against South Africa. The match took place at the Eden Gardens.
Rohit surpassed West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who now sits in second place with 56 sixes in 2019. It took Rohit 23 innings to reach this milestone, five more than de Villiers.
During his innings of 40 runs, Rohit hit Lungi Ngidi for two sixes, reaching a total of 58 sixes. However, he was eventually caught out by Temba Bavuma off the bowling of Kagiso Rabada in the sixth over.
Opting to bat first, India started strongly with Rohit aggressively taking on the South African pacers and hitting boundaries all over the ground. India reached fifty runs in just 4.3 overs.
By the end of the powerplay, India had scored 91 runs for the loss of one wicket. This is the second-highest score conceded by South Africa in the first 10 overs of the tournament. The highest was when they gave away 94 runs for two wickets against Sri Lanka.
At the time of publishing this article, India’s score stood at 293 for 5 in 47 overs.
