Gujarat Titans (GT) announced on Monday that India batter Shubman Gill will take over as captain for the team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, following the departure of Hardik Pandya to the Mumbai Indians (MI).
In a statement, Gujarat Titans described Gill as the leader of a team with a unique blend of experience and youthful energy, which has been the trademark of the franchise.
Gill has an impressive record, amassing 1373 runs in 33 innings with an average of 47.34, including three centuries and eight fifties. In the last season, he scored 890 runs in 17 matches with an average of 59.33, along with three centuries and four fifties, earning him the Orange Cap.
The opener played a pivotal role in Gujarat Titans’ success since their debut in the IPL, including a remarkable innings of 129 runs in 60 balls against the Mumbai Indians in the last season, the highest by any batter in the IPL playoffs.
Expressing his delight and pride at assuming the captaincy role, Gill thanked the franchise for entrusting him with the position and looked forward to leading the team with their exciting brand of cricket.
After winning the IPL in their debut season in 2022, Gujarat Titans reached the finals in the next season, ultimately losing to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Gill’s exceptional performance in the last IPL included three centuries, placing him among the top performers in a single season of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya has returned to his first franchise, the Mumbai Indians, following a trade between the two teams. Pandya spent two successful years with Gujarat Titans, guiding them to a title win in their debut season and finishing as runners-up in the following season.
With Shubman Gill at the helm, Gujarat Titans will be looking to continue their impressive run in the IPL and build on their past successes.
