Qualcomm’s new chip may have surpassed Apple’s M1 in benchmark tests, according to recently discovered data. The Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 scored 1,197 on the single-core test and 9,337 on the multi-core test. In comparison, Apple’s M1 chip scored 2,334 on the single-core test and 8,315 on the multi-core test.
Although Qualcomm’s multi-core test results are impressive, there are still several factors to consider. The M1 chip is three years old and has already been surpassed by Apple’s M2 chip, which performed better than the 8cx Gen 4 in both single-core and multi-core tests.
Furthermore, Apple is preparing to release its M3 chip, which is expected to be even more advanced than the M2. The M3 chip’s highly efficient 3-nanometer manufacturing process poses a challenge for Qualcomm’s latest chip.
One of the key advantages of Apple silicon is its combination of high performance and low power consumption. With double the number of performance cores, the 8cx Gen 4 may consume more power and drain the battery faster than Apple’s chips. This is an area where Apple still maintains a strong advantage.
Nevertheless, Qualcomm’s progress in narrowing the gap with Apple’s chips is encouraging for Windows users who have long desired a serious competitor. The dominance of Apple silicon in the PC industry may finally see some competition.
