Three AI godfathers, Geoffry Hilton, Yan LeCun, and Yoshua Bengio, are currently in heated discussions about the future of the technology they helped create. Hinton has recently expressed concerns about the impact of AI, even suggesting that we may be better off without it. He has been quoted saying, “We’d be better off without this — it’s not worth it,” and has compared the risks of AI to those of fossil fuels.

But, experts such as Meta’s chief AI scientist, Yan LeCun, don’t share Hinton’s fears. LeCun believes that aligning AI’s objectives with those of humans is relatively easy. The public disagreement between Hinton and LeCun has even resulted in LeCun mocking AI alarmists on social media.

One common concern among these experts is the “black box” problem, where even the creators of AI don’t fully understand its processes. Fellow AI godfather, Yoshua Bengio, has also stressed the importance of acknowledging the unknown factors surrounding AI, specifically in terms of its potential risks to society.

Hinton believes that the ultimate threat posed by AI is the potential for control-seeking machines to take over humanity. Despite his concerns, he admits that there is no clear scientific solution to mitigate these issues. Hinton’s worries have prompted him to openly discuss the risks of AI, even quitting his job at Google to do so.

The debate around the future of AI is complex, with arguments about its potential benefits and risks. Despite differing opinions, it’s clear that AI’s impact on society is a topic of importance that requires careful consideration.
