AMD’s next-generation Strix Point laptop chips could face delays, according to recent reports on the upcoming Zen 5 processors. A leaked slide obtained by Moore’s Law is Dead (MLID) on YouTube allegedly reveals a new laptop roadmap for AMD’s upcoming chips. The slide suggests that some Zen 5 mobile silicon has been slightly pushed back, including the Strix Point and Strix Point Halo chips. Previously expected to debut in early summer 2024, the Strix Point chips are now rumored to release in late summer of the same year. The Strix Point Halo chips, which were originally planned for the second half of 2024, are now reportedly delayed until 2025.
While the delay of the Strix Point Halo chips may disappoint some, it is worth noting that the vanilla Strix Point offerings have only experienced a slight slide in their release timeline. However, this news shatters hopes that Strix Point might be available earlier in 2024. On a more positive note, AMD is also set to introduce Hawk Point mobile chips, which feature up to 8 cores and sit just below the Strix Point chips in terms of performance. These chips will utilize RDNA 3 graphics and a Zen 4 architecture, offering an affordable alternative to the Strix Point lineup.
MLID highlights that AMD is focusing on enhancing AI performance with its laptop chips, starting from the top-end Strix Point Halo chips and extending downwards. This aligns with Intel’s approach with its Meteor Lake CPUs, which prioritize AI capabilities to improve laptop battery life. There are even whispers that Microsoft may require CPUs to meet certain AI performance levels for compatibility with Windows 11, particularly for the optimal experience with its AI Copilot feature. Overall, as the release dates for AMD’s Strix Point chips potentially shift, the company continues to prioritize AI innovation and performance in its laptop processors.
