Windows Phone Users Find Way to Bypass YouTube’s Anti-Ad-Blocker Popup
In an ironic turn of events, Windows Phone users have discovered a method to bypass YouTube’s annoying anti-ad-blocker popup. This workaround allows users to watch videos on the site without being bombarded by advertisements, which have recently increased in number.
The trick, discovered by Twitter user @endermanch, involves using a third-party user-agent tool in the Chrome browser to select Windows Phone as the device. By doing so, the YouTube popup that typically blocks videos for users with ad-blockers enabled is removed.
According to Windows Central, this workaround is achieved by downloading and using a third-party user-agent, a tool designed to identify the type of device, browser version, and operating system used to handle HTTP requests. By selecting Windows Phone, users can watch YouTube videos without any interruptions from the anti-ad-blocker popup.
However, it is highly likely that Google will soon patch this loophole, as the company has been aggressive in pushing advertisements and encouraging users to subscribe to its ad-free service, YouTube Premium.
It is worth noting the irony of this situation, as Google did not offer any support for its services on the Windows Phone platform and actively blocked third-party apps that attempted to bridge the gap. The reason behind Google’s unfriendliness towards this relatively small smartphone platform remains unclear, especially when compared to the company’s support for iOS.
While this ad-blocker bypass provides some amusement for Windows Phone users, it also serves as a reminder of the platform’s untapped potential. If Windows Phone had received more support and time to mature, it might have become a significant player in the smartphone market. Unfortunately, Microsoft decided to discontinue the platform prematurely.
As of now, Windows Phone users can enjoy an ad-free experience on YouTube, but it is expected that Google will address this issue in the near future. Despite this temporary victory, it is a poignant reminder of what could have been for the Windows Phone platform.
